Colorado Association of Latino/a Administrators and Superintendents LA LUZ DE LIDERAZGO - A MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT September 2025

Edgar Torres

Welcome to the CO ALAS Membership Spotlight. Each month we introduce you to one of our many CO-ALAS members. Let’s see what they are doing and what’s on their mind!

This month we are featuring Edgar Torres, Principal at Academy High School, Mapleton Public Schools. Edgar shares his professional career and current bio below. You can read the diverse experiences that have led to her various leadership roles. One of our shining stars!
🌟 Career Highlights & Education

In my 17 years as an educator, I’ve held multiple roles, including middle school teacher, assistant principal, senior education policy fellow, high school assistant principal, associate principal, middle school principal, and high school principal. I earned my PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy from the University of Texas at Austin and recently obtained my Superintendent of Schools certification in Texas.

My goal has always been to work with and support students in meeting their goals while showing them that Latinos with similar backgrounds can be in leadership roles. Representation matters.

What is exciting about my job?

I absolutely love connecting with students every day, especially those with backgrounds similar to mine. Whether it’s supporting them through their feelings and frustrations, or talking through their life goals and plans after high school, I feel grateful as the principal at Academy High School to wear so many different hats… and I truly enjoy each one.

🧠 Words from a consejero/a

In the grand scheme of things, titles don’t matter. What truly matters is the work we do for the students and adults we get to serve. People may forget positions or roles, but they’ll always remember what you did for them and how you made them feel.

💡 Advice you would give a new school leader?
  • Connect with the people you serve.

  • Recognize their time and effort.

  • Acknowledge the good work they do.

  • Be present and visible.

☀️ If you catch me outside the office, you'll find...

... me at ABasin, Winter Park, and Breckenridge on the slopes. Is it ski season yet?

🤝 How does CO-ALAS add value?

CO-ALAS adds value by creating opportunities to connect and build solid relationships with other Latino leaders who share similar goals and perspectives.
